The time Australia lost a war to emus

In 1932, Australia sent soldiers with machine guns to fight birds. The birds won. About 20,000 emus were flattening wheat in Western Australia, so the army sent two Lewis guns and 10,000 rounds.

Why it matters: it's the cleanest example you'll find of using the wrong tool. What worked later was boring: bounties for local hunters, and better fences.

Why did the machine guns fail?

What's in the name

Oddly wise: the strange, surprising ideas that leave you a little wiser.

Odd is where the learning is. The emu war, the bias you didn't know you had, the number that doesn't add up. That's the habit we're building. Not more facts, but better thinking: knowing why something is true, how sure to be, and where it breaks.

  • Why, not just what. Every idea comes with its mechanism and its real-world consequences.
  • How sure to be. Each topic shows what was checked and what was softened.
  • Use it, don't just recall it. Quizzes ask you to apply the idea, and many topics tackle a common misconception head-on.
